In Cormòns in the Collio hills, there is one of the most stunning wineries in Friuli Venezia Giulia, a project born in 1972 that has been enriched, with the arrival of the Scarpa family at the helm, with charming panoramic environments, a vinegar factory and an all-day restaurant inspired by the welcoming inns of the past.
It was the year 1972 when Luigi Antonutti, one of the deans of Friulian wine, in love with the land and the fruits that these hills provide, purchased a few hectares in the heart of the Collio Goriziano.
This is how the Azienda Agricola Subida di Monte was born, which has grown over the years, today occupying a total area of 10 hectares of vineyards, woods and fruit trees.
With the aim of projecting this reality towards the future, through a path made of tradition and innovation, in 2020 the leadership of the company passed to the Scarpa family of Agrotech Società Agricola. For the love of their territory, they started an “emotional” growth project with Andrea Antonutti, son of Luigi who manages the production chain.
We want to continue doing things well as farmers used to do in the past and become a gateway to the world for our beloved Collio.
(Scarpa family)
A vision that can be touched with your hand in the new winery and tasting rooms inaugurated in 2024, a project by the Ak Plus architecture studio, which blends in with the surrounding vineyards thanks to a play of terraces, panoramic windows and levels dug into the hill.
Subida di Monte wines are produced with the utmost respect for nature and the territory, without the use of synthetic chemicals, pesticides and herbicides, with the aim of being the maximum expression of Collio, a hilly area in the province of Gorizia that extends close to the border with Slovenia, between the Isonzo and Judrio rivers.
The winery produces a selection of whites, including Fuart, 100% Friulian grape, and reds, including Poncaia, a Merlot aged in barriques, both award-winning and present in the elite of world wine guides.
Thanks to a partnership of choice between the Scarpa family and Maria Gemelli, the Contessina del Barco of Modena, a vinegar factory was also born inside Subida di Monte where in historic barrels of chestnut, oak, ash, cherry and juniper a balsamic vinegar of extraordinary quality is produced, aged at least 25 years, capable of transforming every dish into a work of culinary art.
All the products of the farm, from the wines to the vinegar and the acacia and wildflower honey that grow in the acacia woods of the estate, can be tasted (and purchased) in the wonderful new tasting room of the Cellar characterized by a scenic window overlooking the barrel cellar.
The experience can also be continued by moving upstairs, to the Locanda Alle Vigne, a café, bistro and restaurant opened in 2024 by the Scarpa family.
Each visit includes a brief presentation and history of the company, access to the tanks and barriques area, to the vineyards, and to the vinegar factory with tasting of the balsamic vinegar and honey produced on site. An extraordinary journey to discover the excellence of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
The Secret
The winery is characterized by an original stencil motif on the walls that was taken from a bas-relief discovered during the restoration. A detail that was also reported in some of the elegant embossed labels of the company’s wines.
