Cantina Visintini (UD) — Friuli Venezia Giulia Secrets

In Corno di Rosazzo, in the Colli Orientali, a winery that merges with the ancient tower of the Gramogliano Castle, the surrounding hills, and the history of a family devoted to love for the territory and the production of excellent wines in biodynamic agriculture.

Upon arriving at the winery, after traveling along a panoramic road immersed in the vineyards of one of the most beautiful areas of Friuli Venezia Giulia, we are welcomed by a curious and romantic stone tower. It is the precious testimony that has come down to us of the Gramogliano Castle, whose foundation dates back to the 13th century and which once extended for hundreds of meters around the property.

Since 1884 this small fiefdom has been owned by the Visintini family who, with Andrea and his son Oliviero in the 1970s began to enhance the winemaking tradition of these lands by investing in the winery, built next to the ancient tower, and equipment always more updated.

We cherish the past, while looking to the future and continuing to invest in the quality of our wines and our estate.

(Visintini Family)

Love and curiosity for this profession lead Oliviero to share wine stories with winemaking friends from all over the world; experiences that led him, first in the Colli Orientali, to experiment with the cultivation of vines in biodynamics, a virtuous practice for which he is today the spokesperson throughout the region.

The cultivation of vineyards in the Visintini winery is based, in fact, on the knowledge of the forces that govern living beings, with particular attention to the planets and moons, trying to put the land and sky in the right interconnection and to work the wine as little as possible to keep tastes and aromas unchanged.

The cellar is located in one of the hilly terrains of the region most favorable to the cultivation of vines as it is made up of Eocene marl mixed with sandstone and benevolently influenced by an excellent microclimate and perfect exposure to the sun.

Since 2001, the company has been managed by Oliviero together with his sisters Cinzia and Palmira who cultivate over 30 hectares between the DOC Friuli Colli Orientali area and a small part in the DOC Isonzo area.

Following a recent renovation of the entire farm, a new cellar was built, where the barriques and amphorae for the aging of the wines rest, a shop open to the public with tasting rooms and a panoramic terrace overlooking the Colli Orientali.

The barrel cellar is beautiful and houses at the end of the long room some “art barrels” decorated by the painters Giancarlo and Giuliano Caneva and Francesco Borzani.

The latter became the protagonist of the book “Pignolo. Cultivating the Invisible” written by Ben Little, sommelier, writer and artist, born in Dublin but Friulian by adoption, who was enchanted by this ancient vine which, having low yield and long maturation times (at least 5 years), has become a metaphor for “fighting” alongside the winemakers who have chosen to follow the rhythms of Nature, even if more difficult.

A strong, frank wine that stretches straight to the heart, just like a tasting experience at the Visintini Winery.

The Secret

For Visintini, tasting a wine is a pleasure that must start with the eyes. For this reason, they dedicated great effort to the creation of the labels, designed and colored by hand by the artist Zeudi Proietti, which depict flowers and fruits with the idea of savoring the aromas in the mind before tasting them in the glass.
