Osteria BarBagianni (UD) — Friuli Venezia Giulia Secrets

At the gate of the ancient medieval village of Strassoldo, the original Osteria BarBagianni embodies all the charm of the inns of the past, decorated with hundreds of wonderful artistic majolica tiles created by its innkeeper and owner.

Where at the beginning of the year 1000 stood the drawbridge that protected the two castles of the village from barbarian incursions and unwanted guests, between the two old watchtowers, there is a Osteria with a curious name, a welcoming refuge for poets of the daily life and wandering souls.

Osteria BarBagianni opened in 2019 in the spaces that previously housed the atelier of Anna De Vincenzo Vidal, the “queen of majolica”, architect and designer, as well as mother of Carolina, the current owner, Veronica, graphic designer following the maternal artistic footsteps, and Valentina who works in fashion.

I am happy to have given a new soul to this magical location, transforming it into a place where you are always welcomed with a smile and you can feel at home at any time of the day.

(Carolina, Owner)

With the opening of BarBagianni, the Antica Dimora dell’Arte atelier moved to a building next door, thus leaving room for Carolina’s project who here she has combined her two great passions: artistic ceramics and food.

The place is, in fact, characterized by hundreds of colorful majolica tiles, most of which were made by her and her sister Veronica, which decorate every corner, from the tables, each characterized by a different motif, to the floors, up to the magnificent stoves, created by Anna, which warm up, not only aesthetically, the 2 rooms of the Osteria.

Hundreds of owls peek out among the decorations and the old stone walls, winking from the shelves and the menu as a sign of good luck. A symbol as well as Anna’s stylistic code who, since she was a child, chose this curious animal as her “totem”, transferring this passion also to her daughters.
Hence Carolina’s choice to call her place BarBagianni, in a nice play on assonances and childhood memories.

The Osteria offers excellent Friulian wines, especially from the Aquileia area, Prosecco di Valdobbiadene and artfully prepared cocktails, a perfect pairing for Barbagianni’s cold cut platters selection made with products from local companies. From the artisanal cooked ham by Dentesano to the raw ham by D’Osvaldo up to the mountain cheeses by Gortani, everything is carefully selected to reflect the richness and flavors of the nearby territory.

Carolina, a perfect landlady, has created a magical environment, where you can meet up with friends or relax in the company of your own thoughts. Not just a traditional osteria with cuisine, therefore, yet a perfect meeting point from breakfast to the aperitif time.

The Secret

Under Habsburg rule, at the beginning of the 20th century, the building housed an inn called “Maximilian Khun von Kuhnenfeld”, in honor of the son of Baron Franz Kuhn von Kuhnenfeld, Minister of War of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who from 1891 to 1896 lived in Strassoldo.
