The only bar and restaurant on the sea in the center of Trieste, Pier The Roof offers a wonderful view of the quays of the city's Old Port, a few meters from Piazza dell’Unità d'Italia.
The sunset over the sea, the sailing boats lined up between the piers of Marina San Giusto and all the charm of the old ports with a great history. In love with the location, the entrepreneurs Manuela and Walter Gustin in 2017 completed the renovation of this historic venue in Trieste, transforming it into a modern restaurant and cocktail bar with an international mood.
Pier The Roof could be located in Rovinj, Mykonos or Ibiza, as well as in Trieste. The decor and the outdoor terraces are, in fact, inspired by the typical marine mood characterized by the colors white and blue, lots of wood and all around the blue of the sea that brings us back to an atmosphere of holiday relaxation.
We wanted to give a soul to one of the most magical places in Trieste so that we can experience it at all hours of the day.
(Manuela, owner)
The interior of the venue is completely dedicated to a yachting theme, combining design furnishings with many salvaged elements. And it is precisely the “reuse” of common sailing objects that makes Pier The Roof so special.
Like the large convivial table that was created by utilizing a life raft, the round fishing pots used as lampshades and chandeliers, or the old boat headlights turned into lanterns.
Even the mise en place follows the same concept, with small net floats used as napkin holders or the little wooden fishes decorated with shells employed as a table numbering system.
The restaurant is divided into three areas with different food & wine concepts, perfect for any time of day: on the ground floor there is the outdoor café, more informal, ideal for breakfasts and aperitifs, and the à la carte restaurant; while the upper floor, open only in summer, houses the lounge bar which, with beach chairs, large poufs and DJ sets, is perfect for a cocktail with friends and a portion of fried finger food.
The cuisine is based on fish and offers typical Trieste dishes with some international forays such as the Carpaccio of marinated croaker with apple and ginger chutney, the Tagliolino of fresh pasta with busara of scampi and yellow datterino tomatoes and the Bocconcini of Asià in boreto (dogfish) with grilled polenta, apple and pumpkin jam.
The wine list is also excellent; on the other hand, the sunset overlooking the San Giusto hill and the Miramare Castle just makes any drink special!
The Secret
The first sailing clubs of Trieste date back to the late nineteenth century, when the city belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire and, right in the pier to the left of Pier The Roof, there is the oldest sailing company in the Adriatic, the Adriatic Yacht Club. Founded in 1903, it also boasts a splendid terrace open to the members of the structure.
